Opening of the Exhibition Took Place

    Opening of special exhibition “Mongols in the Memories of Oscar Mamen”, dedicated to the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Norway, organized by Institute of Internatiol Studies, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, Embassy of Norway, Chinggis Khaan National Museum and Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, Norway, took place on 16th of June, at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum in Ulaanbaatar.

    At the opening of the exhibition, Ankhbayar.N, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, Signe Brudeset, Nonresident Ambassador of Kingdom of Norway to Mongolia, Batbold.N, Head of the Research Department of Chinggis Khan National Museum, and Maria Kartveit, researcher from the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, Norway, gave speeches respectively. 

    The opening was also attended by scientists and researchers from Institute of International Studies, Institute of History of Mongolian Academy of Sciences, National University of Mongolia, Mongolian National University of Education.

    Oscar Mamen (1885-1955) was a Norwegian adventurer and salesman who travelled in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, China and Russia for almost 30 years. In 2017, Oscar Mamen’s grandchildren donated the collection from his travels to the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. The collection consists of 10,000 photographs, 500 objects, diaries, letters, travel documents and a manuscript. The photographs taken by him and his cousin Alfred Rustad while in Mongolia starting from 1911, are undoubtedly considered as rare new sources of Mongolian history of the 20th century.

    The exhibition was initiated by Professor Batsaikhan.O, Institute of International Studies, Academician S. Chuluun, director of Chinggis Khan National Museum, and Maria Kartveit, researcher from the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. Only a part of the rare exhibits and sources collected by him while in Mongolia are displayed in the exhibition. This year, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Norway, organizers have aimed to present the works of the famous Norwegian traveler to public.

   During the conference “Mongols in the Memories of Oscar Mamen”, which took place after the opening of the exhibition, Maria Kartveit, researcher from the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, Erdenebat.J, Department of British and American Studies, National University of Mongolia, and professor Batsaikhan.O, Institute of International Studies, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, have presented their paper. 

    Exhibition will be open for pubic until 25th of June.
